Native Denverite, dancer and quintessential performance artist Judith Ren-Lay long ago left these parts for New York, but she did return periodically to perform here in `80s and `90s, all the while wowing the critics in the places where it mattered most: The L.A. Times called her an “urban griot,” and the New York Times countered with “an explorer whose undiscovered country is life itself.” This is a woman, much awarded over her thirty-year career, who knows her oeuvre, combining disciplines — avant garde voicings, movement, theater — to elegant and stunning ends.
Ren-Lay returns to Denver to perform Selections from the Stealth Songbook tonight at 9:30 p.m. in the Jungle Room of the Mercury Cafe, 2199 California Street. Admission is $10; call 303-294-9258 for reservations and information.
