Representatives of the 2008 Democratic National Convention are looking for a great piece of ass: a donkey that will serve as the August event’s symbol. So they turned to the folks at the National Western Stock Show, where the DNC Official Donkey Mascot Contest happens tonight.

According to horse-show manager Brad Ettleman, the pageant’s judges will include DNC chief executive officer Leah Daughtry, and other prominent politicos may sign up as well. The evaluation standards won’t be as technical as at other Stock Show competitions. “They’ll be looking at behavior and the cuteness factor,” Ettleman says — and since no specific party affiliation is required for entrants, it’s entirely possible the DNC mascot could be owned by Republicans. Wouldn’t that be a kick?

The contest gets under way at 7 p.m. at the National Western Events Center, 4655 Humboldt Street, during the National Western Draft Horse and Mule Show. Tickets are $14. Get more details at 1-888-551-5004 or www.nationalwestern.com.
