The Black Power movement is a piece of American history that still strikes fear, anger and misinformation into the hearts of some people. But for anyone looking to get past the rhetoric, ArgusFest will host a screening and group discussion tonight of The Black Power Mix-tape 1967-1975, a documentary assembled from lost footage shot by Swedish filmmakers at the time of the events.
“We’d like to encourage critical thinking and facilitate discussion around issues of human rights, social justice and the media,” says ArgusFest founder Jason Bosch. “I feel the Black Power movement, as with the civil-rights movement, was hugely important in advancing the cause of universal human rights.
“I want to create a space for people to discuss these issues, rather than it just [being] my opinion,” he adds. “If you’re interested in learning about the Black Power movement, this is a great opportunity to come and engage in a community discussion.”
The Black Power Mixtape screening and group discussion begins at 7 p.m. at the Mercury Cafe, 2199 California Street. The event is free, with donations accepted. Get more information at mercurycafe.com.
