There are thirteen member societies at the non-profit TACtile Textile Arts Center, each of them specializing in arts as old as the hills, yet somehow completely contemporary in a time when doing for yourself is back in style. They embroider, tat, knit, bead, weave and quilt; know their way around a needle and thread or a warp and a weft; and all help preserve skills handed down from woman to woman for centuries.
The Rocky Mountain Region Societies, Guilds and Network Exhibition, which opened earlier this month, is their show, a chance for these artists to strut their handy stuff in TACtile’s lovely gallery space. While the show will be up through February 28, the center is hosting an open house today from noon to 4 p.m., with ongoing demonstrations by members of the various groups represented. If you like what you see, you might even be inspired to sign up for one of the many workshops they sponsor at TACtile. You go DIY, girl.
