In show-music phenom Ryan Scott Oliver’s 35MM: A Musical Exhibition, photographs — specifically, photographs taken by Oliver’s real-life squeeze, photographer Matthew Murphy — set the stage for the show’s denouement. A series of musical vignettes plotted around individual shots, 35MM completes the imagery with vocal star power in big, all-original production numbers written by Oliver and informed by modern pop music.
Oliver’s well-crafted combination of eye and ear candy turned out to be an irresistible challenge for Ignite Theatre, says artistic director Keith Rabin, who notes that his tight, big-voiced six-member cast includes some of “Denver’s best,” along with some creative enhancement: “Originally, it was just the singers and a projection screen, but I wanted to add my own sense of theatricality to it. Along with the original photo projections, I’ve added other things, like props and staging, to make it seem like more than a concert. Whether you like visual or performing art better, it’s really a mixture of both.”
35MM takes the stage at the Aurora Fox Arts Center, 9900 East Colfax Avenue in Aurora, tonight at 7:30 p.m., with shows running weekends through May 4. (There’s also a Monday-night performance on April 14.) Admission is $19 to $27; reserve tickets at ignitetheatre.com or call 720-362-2697.
