The idea for Fashion’s Night Out debuted in 2009 in New York City and key fashion meccas worldwide as a way to combat weak clothing sales in an even weaker economy. Now in its third year, the glitzy retail open house will spread exponentially across the U.S. today, including in downtown Boulder, which is hosting the event for the first time.

“We were approached by the New York team from Vogue to become part of it,” explains Downtown Boulder spokeswoman Terri Takata-Smith. “It had been so successful in bigger markets that they are now directing their efforts toward trying to spread out to smaller communities throughout the country.” Boulder, she adds, hopped on the wagon a little late — in June — but that doesn’t mean it will be anything less than spectacular when events kick off tonight on the Pearl Street Mall, with a flash mob and impromptu outdoor runway show in front of the Boulder County Courthouse.

Afterward, the crowds are invited to disperse throughout the mall, where participating businesses will host in-store celebrations; along the way, the BE Life dance group will hoof it from one spot to another.

“In the past few years, Boulder has really become a foodie destination,” says Takata-Smith. “We see Fashion’s Night Out as an opportunity to showcase our boutiques in the same way. Boulder’s not exactly known for fashion, but we hope this will change it. And actually, Boulder is pretty fashion-forward!” The city will commence letting the world know just how style-savvy it actually is tonight at 6 p.m.; events, which are free, continue until 10 p.m. Go to www.fashionsnightoutboulder.com or check out the Facebook event page.
