Back in 1999, when journalist and All the President’s Men co-author Carl Bernstein began researching A Woman in Charge, his new biography of Hillary Clinton, he thought she’d probably run for the U.S. Senate, but he had no idea she’d be the Democratic Party’s leading candidate for president. Still, he felt she was a fascinating subject, as well as something of an enigma despite the untold thousands of words previously written about her. “I just didn’t think that anybody had really captured who this woman was,” he says. “Almost everything you read was either by acolytes and true believers or by opponents and enemies.”
The fascinating fruit of Bernstein’s labor, which he’ll discuss and sign tonight, doesn’t skimp on either the positive or negative aspects of her tale. Hence he believes that “anybody can bring their own values to the task of looking at this person as a whole, living, breathing, real human being. Flesh and blood, not cardboard caricature.”
