The challenges facing local news organizations are very real. That's why reader support matters more than ever. If you believe independent journalism matters, make a contribution today and help us reach our summer fundraising goal of $25,000 by August 9.

$25,000

I’m the first to admit that Bill Maher is an asshole. He’s a sexist jerk and a foolishly staunch libertarian, and yet I love him to death and feel lost and depressed every Friday night that his HBO show is on furlough — which it is right now, until August. Although Maher’s often in bad humor, his comedy’s not; what a pleasure it will be to observe his caustic dissection of our very own DNC when he’s back on the air. I can hardly wait!

In the meantime, he’ll offer a living, breathing sample of that mordant humor during An Evening With Bill Maher, tonight at 8 p.m. at the Paramount Theatre, 1621 Glenarm Place. And where will Bill point his evil eye? Election-trail politics, no doubt. Religion? Quite possible, as he loathes it and will surely be touting his documentary-in-production, Religulous, with Borat director Larry Charles. Wherever he chooses to go, he’s going to make you laugh.

Tickets for the all-ages show are $45 to $55 (and worth every penny, if you’re an addict like me); go to www.livenation.com or call 1-866-461-6556.

Thu., July 10, 8 p.m., 2008
