Next stop, New Year’s Eve. That means it’s time to reflect back, think about the future, and then decide how to best comport yourself in the coming year. Many galleries around town are riffing on that theme for their first shows of the year — so why not start your resolutions early, by noting the following openings and events in your calendar for the first Friday of 2015?

First Friday Mini-Shop: Intention Cookies

$10 fee
Clay artist Marie Gibbons invites folks to get their hands dirty on the first First Friday of the new year. For her initial 2015 mini-shop, you can make an Intention Cookie with Marie: a clay fortune cookie into which you stuff a slip of paper with a special resolution for the new year. The $10 fee includes all the materials, instruction and use of studio tools to make up to three cookies, as well as firing and finishing; you, of course, supply the creativity and the intentions.

As a prelude to a new era at Emmanuel with newly appointed curator Jacquelyn Connolly, the Aurora campus gallery will start off the year with its annual staff-curated exhibition. The group show Resolution is all about looking forward with fresh eyes and optimism. Visitors to the First Friday reception are invited to bring an article of clothing and a resolution they’d like printed on it; Stephan Herrera will upcycle the togs with each guest’s intentions for 2015.
35th Anniversary Show

One of Denver’s oldest and most storied co-ops, Pirate will greet 2015 — and its own incredible 35th anniversary — with a traditional group show by members. Across the street, relative youngster Zip 37 will follow suit. Head to the Navajo Street Arts District for a clear-eyed vision of the coming year in co-op art.
