Gallery Sketches: Three New Shows and Art Events in Denver for the Weekend of May 29-31

At Denver galleries and art museums this weekend, you can say hello to a budding artist or symbolically say goodbye to an exhibit honoring the faceless ranks of the Chicano movement. Another new show looks at how skyrocketing rents and development in fringe neighborhoods are putting the squeeze on artists in the here and now.

Real issues being talked about in Denver right now are the basis for Fo’ Rent Fo’ Real, a show by local collaborators Jared David Paul Anderson and Stephen Daniel Karpik that’s all about the effects of gentrification and rising rents on the creative community. Come to the reception and join the conversation; the show runs through July 6.

Momento Interactivo: The Act of Remembrance

While other galleries are opening their doors for new exhibitions, the Museo de las Americas will say farewell to Chicano, a show that carries on the spirit of the Chicano movement of the ’60s and ’70s through murals and cultural imagery, with a ceremonial deconstruction of artwork painted directly on the walls by the artist duo Los Supersonicos, aka Carlos Frésquez and Francisco Zamora. Put succinctly, that means you’re invited to pick up a paintbrush and paint over the exhibit’s mural art as a way to honor the past and look forward to the future. Dress down for the painting party and enjoy poetry and classical guitar music along the way; painting supplies will be provided. RSVP at guestservices@museo.org.

Mai Wyn Schantz gives over her space to former gallery intern Scott Ryan Roper, a Metropolitan State University of Denver BFA student with a promising future, for Digital Artifacts. For this exhibit of paintings of digitally mapped skull compositions, Roper mixes new and old techniques to show how technology and human individuality march hand in hand in the 21st century.
