Women artists are in the spotlight this weekend as an international star in performance art gets a major survey in Colorado Springs, while here in Denver, you’ll find new work at the Spark co-op and an art party in the boutique gallery, Super Ordinary. The University of Colorado Colorado Springs celebrates its fiftieth anniversary and the career of celebrated multimedia performance artist and longtime UCCS visual-art instructor Senga Nengudi with an exhaustive survey co-produced by MCA Denver and curated by Elissa Auther and Nora Burnett. Originally part of a movement kickstarted in the ‘70s by black artists in Los Angeles and New York, Nengudi combines ritual and sculpture fashioned from everyday materials; the artist will lead the audience in a participatory performance of “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” at the reception. Come back on October 21 for an artist talk with Nengudi and the curators.

Heidi Neubauer-Winterburn, whose wall sculptures juxtapose found materials in unexpected ways, dressing up bones with mylar and yarn, gets her day in the sun at Spark to kick off the fall season. Also in the gallery: mixed media prints by Robert St. John and, in the North Gallery, a show of ceramic sculpture inspired by music from Leona Lazar.

Super Ordinary gathers four women artists together for Of Eros & Psyche and celebrates the occasion with something different: An extended Sunday reception at the Source with tunes and a cereal bar. Featured artist Rachel Paton, also a popular hand-poke tattooer, will be inking all afternoon in the gallery, and while you wait your turn, you can indulge in a $20 mini-manicure by Base Coat Nail Salon, have your cards read by tarot expert Rory Joyner or indulge in morning cocktails by the RiNo Yacht Club.
