Gallery Sketches: Three Shows for the Weekend of August 22-24

Summer’s nearly over, as kids go back to school and vacations wrap up. This weekend, you can wander through a last summer festival before the fall grind commences, see what’s new on the contemporary scene or catch up with the co-ops. It’s all good. Here are some suggestions:

Ryan Everson, Landlines
Gildar Gallery
August 22 through September 26
Opening reception: 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, August 22

Gildar Gallery brings back artist Ryan Everson, who’s built sculptural wood-and-metal works of signage and photographed them in natural landscapes, setting iconic stands of text among trees on mountaintops or drifting slowly across a lake in a canoe. Think of the new show, Landlines, as a visual backwoods Hollywood, juxtaposing civilization and the pristine. Landlines runs through September 26.

Louis Recchia: Solo Show
Zip 37
August 22 through September 7
Opening reception: 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, August 22

Longtime co-op artist Louis Recchia hangs another solo at Zip 37, featuring new work in his instantly recognizable pop-expressionist style. Artists like Recchia seem to inspire fledgling art collectors to get in the game, as he did for Westword scribe Bree Davies and events maven/art scenester Dana Cain; maybe you’ll take a shine to something of his as well, and start a collection of your own. Zip is open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays only; see Recchia’s work through September 7.

Affordable Arts Festival
Arapahoe Community College campus
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, August 24
$5 admission

Sunday offers another opportunity to start building a collection, at the Affordable Art Festival, where all artwork is priced at $100 or less. Browse booths manned by 115 local and national artists in mediums ranging from jewelry and ceramics to painting and sculpture at Arapahoe Community College in Littleton, and you might come away with a beautiful bargain for your home.
