The National Western Stock Show has not been rustled away from Denver, and that alone is reason for Mayor Michael Hancock to be the grand marshal at the annual Stock Show Parade, which will stampede through downtown at lunchtime today. “Working with Mayor Hancock and his staff over the past twelve months in regard to the future of the National Western made our selection of a grand marshal an easy one,” says Paul Andrews, NWSS president and CEO.
And this despite the fact that Hancock won’t be riding a horse like a real buckaroo, but instead will be sitting in a surrey adorned with a banner noting that he’s the grand marshal. And in case that’s not enough of a clue, he’ll also be wearing an orange cowboy hat in support of the Denver Broncos.
The parade starts at noon at Union Station, and Hancock — along with cattle, bands, floats and performers — will proceed down 17th Street for fifteen blocks. At the end of the line at the Wells Fargo atrium, they’ll join a Western party, complete with live music and a VIP fashion show (watch out for those orange hats) that starts at 11:30 a.m. All the festivities are free, but you can also buy a barbecue lunch for $9, with proceeds going to the 4-H International Youth group.
