National Public Lands Day is a celebration of our natural resources, from local parks and community gardens to state parks and national monuments,” says Anna Wadhams, NPLD program manager for the National Environmental Education Foundation, noting that thirty sites across Colorado will participate in volunteer projects that involve building and maintaining trails and roads, clearing out invasive vegetation, scattering seeds and cleaning river banks. “It’s all about exposing people to the wonderful public lands they have available and getting them invested in taking care of those lands. This month also happens to be the fiftieth anniversary of the Wilderness Act, so many of our sites are also choosing to highlight that milestone legislation.”

Among the local organizations participating is Friends of the Dillon Ranger District, a recent recipient of a Public Lands Every Day grant. Today’s project, in partnership with the Colorado Mountain Club, is to rehabilitate the Tenderfoot Mountain trail system, an area between Dillon and Keystone that sits within a protected elk calving ground. The event runs from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with breakfast and lunch provided. Volunteers are encouraged to register at cmc.org; all NPLD volunteers will receive a coupon for free entry into a national park or national monument federal-fee area.
