After more than 25 years in the comedy industry, Dave Attell has witnessed a lot of changes. “Everyone’s on camera today,” says the comic, who worked with the best in the New York club scene before improvising on the streets with his bar-hopping travel show, Insomniac. “Everyone wants to be heard, be a product, be both the performer and the audience. When we did Insomniac, that was a different time; people weren’t always TV-ready. We saw that more toward the end — people would be performing for the camera.”
Attell is still touring, though, and he returns to Denver (his 2003 album, Skanks for the Memories, was recorded at Comedy Works) for a four-show run that begins tonight. “I would say that Comedy Works is one of the best clubs in the country — and I’m not the only one saying that,” he says. “Pretty much every comic that I work with looks forward to playing there. The acoustics are great, and it’s a small crowd. And Denver crowds are more laid-back and don’t get offended as easily; they get that these are jokes and stay cool about it. I always enjoy playing there.”
Attell will do two shows each tonight and tomorrow, at 7:15 and 9:45 p.m., at Comedy Works South, 5345 Landmark Place in Green-wood Village; tickets are $32. For more information, visit comedyworks.com.
