The real Lola Montes was one of the wildest characters of the nineteenth century, a dancer, actress and courtesan who was romantically involved with both Franz Liszt and the Bavarian king Ludwig I, who made her a countess. Fittingly, she was memorialized in the 1955 film Lola Montes, by Max Ophüls, a surreal, colorful and romantic work with a history almost as controversial as her own. Available only in a damaged, severely cut form for years, it was recently restored for suc-cessful showings at Cannes and a general release. The new print is as close to the director’s original vision as possible — finally making what’s arguably one of the greatest movies ever created available to the general public.
