That pecan pie packs plenty of calories, but you can preemptively burn them off today at the 40th Annual Mile High United Way Turkey Trot in Washington Park. Last year, more than 9,500 runners registered, and upwards of 20,000 attended the celebrated trot, which Forbes has called one of the ten best Thanksgiving Day events in the nation.
One change this year: A costume contest. “Years back, people started dressing up for the race,” says spokesman Matthew Vermillion. “This year, we’re making it official and holding a contest with judges.” Other new offerings include: a start village where Radio Disney will entertain the kids and Orangetheory Fitness will lead warmups; post-race yoga with Karma Yoga Studio; and a beer garden featuring local craft brewers like Wynkoop, Renegade and Great Divide.
Your registration fee — $40 in advance, with discounts for seniors and children — provides resources to improve childhood literacy and high-school graduation rates.
Activities start at 8 a.m. with race-day registration; the first wave of runners departs at 10:15 at the southeast corner of the park (South Downing Street and Louisiana Avenue). Register and get more information at unitedwaydenver.org or select Runner’s Roost locations.
