Geeks love art, even if the art they love is more often found on vintage film posters and in comics than on gallery walls. Of course, there’s no real reason that entertainment art like this can’t hang on gallery walls, as Hall of Justice owner Zac Conley will tell you.
“I really want to focus on the fabricators, the cosplayers and sci-fi artists who are doing SFX work, and show that they’re actual, true, legit artists,” he explains. “It doesn’t have to be fine art. There are a lot of talented artists working in the entertainment-art field, and nobody shows that stuff off.”
This month, the Hall of Justice Featuring Matt Busch and Landon Meier show will offer several looks at the possibilities within the field. Busch is a Lucasfilm artist who’s worked on everything from Star Wars to Indiana Jones. Meier is best known for Hyperflesh, his creepily realistic masks that portray everything from giant babies to celebrities — most famously, the Heisenberg mask worn by Bryan Cranston at San Diego Comic Con a few years ago. A handful of similar artists’ work will also be on display.
The show — a fundraiser for Art of War, a charity that benefits veterans suffering from PTSD — opens tonight at 6 p.m. at the Hall of Justice comic and entertainment art gallery, 841 Santa Fe Drive. Admission is free; for more information, visit facebook.com/hojgallery.
