The beauty of River North’s Wazee Union, 3501 Wazee Street, with its affordable artist studios and spirit of community, has gone forth and multiplied: Wazee’s managers, S. Brian Smith and Neil Adam, will officially christen Walnut Workshop, the project’s sister location across the railroad tracks at 3525 Walnut Street, when the new space joins in with the area’s monthly Second Saturday festivities, another new RiNo tradition that’s off and running, with plans in place to to expand in the future. Smith reports that both buildings are filled to the gills and thriving, and that’s a good thing, as it means there will be twice as much to explore on this night of open studios and gallery shows.
“Everybody is working together for first time, finally,” Smith says.
Smith also promises double the fun: To begin with, food trucks will be serving eats at each open location. Wazee Union will also open Rejected, a themed show in participation with the citywide Month Of Photography, in addition to hosting a fashion show by resident designer Natasha Lillipore. That energy will no doubt pour over into the newly anointed Walnut Workshop, but don’t forget to visit Ice Cube Gallery, 3320 Walnut Street, for shows by Paloma Scheck and Amber Fries; Plinth Gallery, 3520 Brighton Boulevard, where handbuilt ceramic works by Jim and Shirl Parmentier are on view; and designHaus Denver, 3939 Williams Street, which will host a jewelry making demonstration by metalsmith Cindalena. And afterward, friends can reconnoiter at an after-party at Jake’s, 3800 Walnut Street, beginning at 9:30 p.m.
Check it out for yourself tonight from 6 to 10 p.m. (Wazee Union’s hours will be 7 to 11 p.m.); for information go to http://wazeeunion.com or www.rivernorthart.com/second-saturdays.
