Learning is always more fun when you have a beer in hand. That’s the basic idea behind Nerd Nite Denver, a lecture (and drinking) series that encourages people to share the knowledge they’re passionate about. With topics ranging from the evolution of Wesley Crusher’s sweaters on Star Trek: The Next Generation to the anthropology of bone mutilation in primitive cultures, Nerd Nites are full of the kind of knowledge you’re not likely to stumble upon without a guide.
“I love people who love to learn,” explains local organizer Sara Wilson. “We’re all experts in tiny little areas [of knowledge], and we’re all looking for a post-academia way to share that.” This month’s iteration includes a Doctor Who-themed tour of the wonders of the universe, a primer on cued speech, and an exploration of the ways the Internet is connecting more and more parts of our life. You don’t even have to be a nerd to enjoy it: Anyone with a passion for knowledge and/or booze will find something to love.
Get your nerd on starting tonight at 7 p.m. — lectures begin at 8, but you’ll want to mingle and pre-game first — at the Oriental Theater, 4335 West 44th Avenue. Tickets are $5 in advance at theorientaltheater.com or $7 at the door. For tickets and more information, visit denver.nerdnite.com.
