Many thought that the fashionable devolution of transportation devices stopped with brakeless, fixed-gear bikes, but Boulder’s Captain Obvious and crew continue to defy expectations with the 27th Almost-Annual Matt Armbruster Memorial Big Wheel Rally. Forget carbon fiber: Go get yourself a plastic tricycle and head to the Walrus, 1911 11th Street in Boulder, today at 5 p.m. for various Big Wheel antics, including power slides, jumps and races that will last until 2 a.m., with plenty of bar stops on the way to wet your whistle. Although no registration is required, wristbands are available for $5 to $25, entitling ralliers and non-participant followers to deals at each of the pit stops; proceeds benefit the Saint Joseph Hospital Foundation’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. If you’re interested in modifying your plastic speed machine (as is strongly recommended), would like a complete itinerary or need more information about the event, visit www.bigwheelrally.com, call 1-888-252-6379 or e-mail Captain@BigWheelRally.com.

Will you step up to support Westword this year?

At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $21,000 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
