Most action movies barely work as brainless entertainment, so when you come across the rare example that works on multiple levels, it’s important to cherish it. Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 masterpiece, RoboCop, is one such film.

RoboCop is a lot of things,” says Keith Garcia, creative manager for the Alamo Drafthouse Cinema in Littleton. “It’s a great science-fiction movie, it’s a great dark comedy, and as a horror fan as a kid, I always loved the rated-R boundaries that film got to push. It’s a really gory, intense film.”

And that’s not even considering its value as biting social commentary and startlingly accurate dystopian prophecy — or the mindless joy of watching RoboCop blow up the bad guys real good while spouting catchphrases. The brilliant combination of all of these elements, brought to life by a strong cast that includes Peter Weller, Nancy Allen and Kurtwood Smith, is what propelled the film to block-buster status and what keeps it relevant and entertaining to this day.

See RoboCop tonight at 7 p.m. at the Alamo, 7301 South Santa Fe Drive in Littleton. Tickets are $10.75 and include a collectible button (the film is on the Alamo’s 100 Essential Favorite Movies list). For tickets and more information, visit drafthouse.com/denver/littleton.
