The Winter Park Carnival pays homage to Mary Jane, a legendary madam who resided in the area toward the end of the nineteenth century and is the namesake for Mary Jane Mountain. And this year’s 38th-birthday bash, which kicks off at the Yager House at Devil’s Thumb Ranch and continues in Winter Park, will do her proud.
The celebration packs in a weekend’s worth of activities, including a $1 pancake breakfast, free bump and tele-ski tips and expertise, an ice- and snow-sculpture contest, a “Mary Jane and the Miner” look-alike contest, a night parade in downtown Winter Park and fireworks. There will also be an après-ski celebration at the Derailer with live music from the Whales, a Coors Liberty Ski giveaway, a Bloody Mary bar and an outdoor ice bar.
Catherine Ross of the Winter Park and Fraser Chamber of Commerce says that the new Stagecoach Classic cross-country ski race/tour will be “a really fun addition to the festivities.” Race participants will meet up with festival-goers at the after-party in Hideaway Park for live music, beer and food before the parade and fireworks.
