The end of a relationship is never fun, but Andrzej Zulawski’s film Possession takes the concept of “bad breakup” to some very strange places.
“One partner is moving on with their life; the other partner can’t accept that and demands to know why,” says Theresa Mercado, host of the Cruel Autumn film series at Crash 45. “He starts digging around deeper than he probably should and finds what has captured her attention, and it’s not what he expected it to be. It’s just a fantastic movie, a total mindfuck.”
How much of a mindfuck? Enough that the savage beatings, self-mutilation and murder that erupt in the wake of the disintegration of the relationship at the heart of the film are easily the most relatable things about it. After all, most of us can imagine a breakup gone so wrong that violence plays a part, but a breakup that leads to illicit monster sex in an eerily empty apartment? Not so much.
“I challenge anyone to watch it and tell me what they think happened. I don’t think any two of them will agree,” Mercado says.
See it tonight at 7 p.m. at Crash 45, 321 East 45th Avenue, but get there by 6:30 to find a seat and order drinks. Admission is free, but booze isn’t, so plan accordingly. For more information, visit tiny.cc/capossession.
