Stuart Alden of Ink Lounge knows the craft-fair routine. With his wife, Nicky, he screenprints and sells unique calendars at various shows and markets, which, he admits, are mostly a woman’s world. “I’m usually one of a handful of guys in there,” he says. “And a lot of the time, the other guys are just helping wives set up. I’d say 60 to 80 percent of things for sale are more female-oriented.”
But, while looking for an antidote, Alden realized that he knows a lot of men making cool stuff in town — woodworkers, jewelers, screenprinters like himself — and formulated half an idea to round them up for a more manly craft fair of their own. “A lot of these guys don’t participate in craft fairs. And at first, they had the same response: It’s a silly idea. But, it sounds kind of fun.”
Cut to the chase? Holiday Mancraft was born. Today from 4 to 10 p.m., Alden and a handpicked crew of crafty guys will sell their wares at Ink Lounge during an informal bazaar with free wine, beer and cupcakes (while they last) to soften up the crowd. Extra bonus? There will actually be gifts there that you can give a guy. How novel is that? Ink Lounge is at 1512 South Acoma Street; for details visit www.inkloungecreative.com.
