Theater is back on track, with many fall season offerings debuting on Labor Day Weekend. From Aurora’s Vintage Theatre to Lakewood’s acclaimed Edge Theater and the Bug in Denver, the pickings are suddenly looking good.

Vintage kicks off the season — the fall theater season, that is — with Bruce Graham’s football comedy, Any Given Monday, which tells the sad story of Lenny, an all-right guy ditched by his wife, who’s left only with Monday Night Football to keep him company. When his buddy Mick pulls Lenny’s head out of the pizza box and sets him back on track, things get interesting. Sam Gilstrap directs.

Edge remains edgy with Hilary Bettis’s American Girls, directed by Angela Astle, in which a pair of innocent, God-fearing Iowa middle-schoolers set off on a road to perdition in search of elusive Hollywood fame; eventually, the actors playing them are replaced on stage with a video log of what happens next. With an underlying theme of what it means to grow up too fast, this is an outrageous think-piece for the back-to-school season.

Director Verl Hite takes over the Bug for Christopher Durang’s comedy, which follows a woman who has committed suicide through the Tibetan Buddhist netherworld of Bardo, where the dead are redirected into new, reincarnated lives. Problem is, Veronica doesn’t want to come back to the ugly world she left behind. Or does she? Buy a ticket and find out.
