Behind every classic horror movie is a great score. From the eerie synthesizers of Halloween to the ominous two-note riff from Jaws, it’s impossible to imagine a great scary movie without its distinctive music — and you only need to hear a few notes to get chills running down your spine. So in the spirit of the scary season, the music and cinema departments of the Denver School of the Arts are teaming up for Not So Silent: An Evening of Orchestral Music and Spooky Cinema.

“Video Cinema approached me to do a collaboration, and we settled on the theme of scary music — the video cinema students would create original screenplays and films and use a montage of films while we played music to it,” explains Enrique Lasansky, director of orchestras at the DSA. “Some of it is music from existing horror films, and some are just pieces that evoke horror. For example, we used the music from Psycho, which is a very famous scary piece, as well as a piece by [Radiohead’s] Jonny Greenwood, who’s an up-and-coming avant-garde composer. We’re pretty excited about it.”

Catch a performance at 5 or 7 p.m. tonight at the Denver School of the Arts, 7111 Montview Boulevard. Tickets are $14, or $11 for students and seniors. For tickets and additional info, visit dsa.dspk12.org/performances.
Wed., Oct. 15, 5 & 7 p.m., 2014
