Portland multimedia artist Alexis Gideon’s show Alexis Gideon: Video Musics Series opened in late September at Emmanuel Gallery. But gallery director and curator Shannon Corrigan says the collection of still images, drawings and what she calls a “trailer,” for lack of a better word, are like eye candy to fuel interest in tonight’s live video opera performance with the artist in person. And she’s almost at a loss to describe what will transpire: “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen before, visually,” she says. “The pieces are very layered and raw, and the music is so contemporary. He’s a DIY artist from beginning to end, creating all of his own music, with the narratives unfolding in a pretty in-depth story.”
Gideon will present the local premiere of Video Musics: Floating Oceans — a stop-motion animated video based on the writings of Irish author Lord Dunsany and dream experimentation by Irish physicist John William Dunne and interpreted through a battering ram of utterances, morphing musical genres and hands-on imagery — beginning at 6 p.m. (doors open for a reception at 5 p.m.) at Emmanuel, located on the Auraria campus.
