Tom Mauser is no stranger to readers of Denver newspapers: His son, Daniel Mauser, was killed at Columbine, and Tom has been an outspoken activist for gun control ever since. He’s spent more than a decade talking about his son — and in his new book, Walking in Daniel’s Shoes, he tells his own story.

“I’ve been getting an increasing number of e-mails from people who were young at the time and didn’t know much about Columbine, and I thought this would be a way of sharing a story,” Mauser says. “And meeting with the parents of the killers started bringing some…I don’t want to say closure, because there is no closure when you lose a child, but something closer to an ending of a story.”

The shoes on the cover are a symbol: How a boy on the debate team at his school, cut down before his time, inspired his father to step inside his shoes and advocate for meaningful change in gun-control legislation. They’re the shoes Daniel was wearing on April 20, 1999, and they fit his father perfectly.
