“Out West, people don’t parade their eccentricities. Down South, we put them out there for everybody to see,” explains former Southerner Charlotte D’Armond Talbert. Six years ago, the North Carolina theater teacher got together with former student Tessa Carr (now a fellow theater Ph.D.) to create an annual show that celebrates the unique spirit of the South through the women writers who capture its unique, zany quirks so well.
Tonight and tomorrow, the pair will introduce those women to Denver. Southern Voices: the Humorous Writings of Southern Women in Performance will feature the works of Bailey White, Flannery O’Connor, Eudora Welty, Ellen Gilchrist and others. Everyone can relate to their characters, says D’Armond Talbert, because they’re the weird aunts and crazy uncles we recognize in our own families. “The heat gets to people and they do crazy things.”
The humorous stories will be performed as well as read, and they’re not just for women: Men can expect a good laugh, too.
The show takes place in the parish hall at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 1270 Poplar Street, tonight at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10, cash or check only, and include a sweet-tea intermission.
