A lecture about space might sound as boring as an after-school special, but not the way Space in Your Face! does it. This seasonal event, founded two years ago by planetary-science Ph.D. student Julia DeMarines, combines science and art to show how cool and interesting space can be.
“It’s geared toward the young-adult audience, and it’s usually over the top and eccentric,” she says.
Tonight’s event, Venus…So Hot Right Now, will shed some light on one of the solar system’s hottest planets, with presentations by DeMarines and Giada Arney, from the University of Washington, along with music from DJ Suffers, Venus-themed covers of ’80s songs and a comedy skit by Chris Jones.
“There’s going to be an ugly-sweater or space-attire contest. We’ll have prizes at the end, and we’re also going to smell what it smells like on Venus,” DeMarines adds. (Spoiler: It smells like rotten eggs.)
The sulfuric fun begins at 8 p.m. tonight at Deer Pile, 206 East 13th Avenue. Admission is free, but a $5 donation is suggested. For more information, visit facebook.com/spaceinyourfacedenver.
