If you liked the book Fifty Shades of Grey, then SPANK! The Fifty Shades Parody, the pun-heavy musical performance by Mills Entertainment that opens today at the Paramount Theatre, will be sure to release your inner god — or goddess. And if you couldn’t stand E.L. James’s disgustingly popular mild-kink tome? All the better, since SPANK! is a comedy that creatively reimagines the Fifty Shades characters and plot. “It’s a parody, but in a loving, affectionate way,” says Joanna Brumley, spokeswoman for Mills Entertainment. “Most of our audience members are fans of the book, but people who haven’t read it are loving it as well, because you don’t have to have read the book to get it.” You’d have to read the book to get the jabs at the horrible writing quality of Fifty Shades, but for those who miss them, there will still be a hunky leading man, plenty of raunchy jokes and, of course, musical numbers. None of which have any connection to James or Vintage Press; neither are associated with SPANK!, nor have they authorized the production.
SPANK! runs through Saturday at the Paramount, with performances at 8 p.m. tomorrow and Saturday, as well as a 3 p.m. Saturday matinee. All tickets are $45 (which includes parking); purchase yours at tickethorse.com, the Pepsi Center box office, or 303-53-HORSE.
Thu., April 4, 7:30 p.m.; Fri., April 5, 8 p.m.; Sat., April 6, 3 & 8 p.m., 2013
