Jazz has inspired many iconic photos, as anyone who owns classic Blue Note albums of the ’50s and ’60s understands. No wonder the shutterbugs at Working With Artists, a nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about photography, decided to combine the forms at this weekend’s Workshop Sample Days 2006.
The event is dominated by mini-courses taught by WWA instructors. At 11 a.m. today, for instance, WWA assistant director Greg Cradick will host “Creative Light and the Power of Photography,” which he says will allow him to draw upon his background in the theater. “The word ‘photography’ literally means ‘light writing,'” Cradick notes, “so I’ll be talking about how best to use light with your subjects.” That’ll be followed at 3 p.m. by “The Elegant Nude,” an introduction to the bare facts of large-form images presented by Owen O’Meara and Kim Weston. Workshops will continue on Sunday following a 10:30 a.m. champagne brunch featuring jazz vocalist Ellyn Rucker and an elaborate spread of gourmet quiches and fresh fruit. Got the picture?
Admission for the Sunday brunch is $45 per person or $80 per couple, with WWA members getting in for $35 apiece — but all of the workshops are free. For a schedule, visit www.workingwithartists.org or phone 303-837-1341.
Sat., Sept. 9, 10 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sun., Sept. 10, 1-3:30 p.m.
