For his latest exhibition, Yinfinity, artist Dmitri Obergfell took a key element of hot-rod and custom-car culture — chameleon automotive paint, a shimmery, iridescent lacquer that changes color as an object moves — out of its traditional street context and into the brave new world of galleries.
“Chameleon automotive paint is a nice metaphor for change, based on how you interact with it,” says Oberfell. “In its normal application, the paint is sort of something that moves around you. I’m changing it so the viewer moves around the object and gives a sense of physically moving through the time and space of the object.” The work in Yinfinity all falls under the overarching theme of cultural transition, he says, which connects it to Obergfell’s 2013 show, The Visigoths, presented at Galleria Upp in Venice. Here, he’s looking specifically at the symbols and language used to define that transition.
