I played college rugby for Humboldt State in northern California. When this comes up in conversation, people are taken aback. I watch their expressions as they think, “She seemed so mild-mannered, but really, she’s a barbarian!” I treasure those moments. Nobody messes with an ex-rugger.
And Colorado is a rugby state, with USA Rugby headquartered in Boulder, the town of Glendale declaring rugby its official sport and the annual Aspen Ruggerfest, a mecca for rugby tournaments. Which is why you should head up to Aspen this weekend to check out the thirty-odd teams from here and abroad that will battle it out for the championship. Ruggerfest begins today and runs through Sunday, when the championship game will be played; it’s free and open to both the public and the hordes of burly men and women who will be participating. Visit www.aspenrugby.com/ruggerfest.htm for information.
