Denver designers Jil Cappuccio and Kirsten Coplans have already proven themselves as an apt merchandising duo over the past few years. But after a period of brainstorming, they’re shooting for something a little different — and on a slightly grander scale — by hosting the first Indie Wearable Craft Urban Market, with an expanded sphere of participants that includes a few more local cottage industries crossing the boundaries of craft and design.

“We thought that this show could fill a niche that Denver isn’t doing yet,” Coplans says. “This is not the traditional craft fair, where everyone has an individual booth. Instead, we’re bringing a select bunch of designers together. It’s kind of curated in a way; we’re hoping it will read a little bit, but not exactly, like a pop-up store rather than a traditional craft show. We tried to pick designers that would be compatible, so if you love one of Jil’s tops, it might go great with a certain pair of Swear Jar earrings. We’re trying to create those compatible looks by merchandising everything mixed together.

It’s not easy to reinvent the wheel, but we’re going for something that’s a little bit fresh — at least we hope that’s what people will see.”

Also featuring Darling Ruth clothing by Christina Patzman, jewelry by Becky’s Buttons and Swear Jar, and T-shirts by Vital Industries alongside Coplans’s and Cappuccio’s wares, Indie Wearable Craft opens tonight from 5 to 9 p.m. and continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday in a studio space at 1754 Humboldt Street. Admission is free; for information, visit the Indie Wearable Craft page on Facebook.
Fri., April 29, 5-9 p.m.; Sat., April 30, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.; Sun., May 1, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., 2011
