Performer Kelsie Huff’s one-woman show, HUFFS, is a bit hard to explain. It’s as much a monologue as it is a standup routine, but there’s also a hint of performance mixed in there. “I think because I go to a darker place in HUFFS than most standup, I will call this a monologue,” says Huff.
That darker place details a trip with her mother to her grandfather’s funeral, where they eventually gather around the casket with family members to reminisce. Out come stories of schoolgirl antics, a boozed-up father and more as Huff tosses together a quirky sense of humor with an autobiographical tale. But just because it’s dark doesn’t mean it’s not funny.
“I still call myself a comedian, because I think it covers the writing and performing parts of what I do,” says Huff. “You can both write and perform solo work in this really honest, vulnerable and hilarious way.”
HUFFS plays tonight at 8 p.m. and runs through August 27 at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut Street in Boulder, as part of the Boulder Fringe Festival; admission is $8 to $10. For information and showtimes, visit www.boulderfringe.com.
