When the curtain goes up tonight on Patrick Mueller and Control Group Productions, a dance company in flux, at BINDERY | space, it will be a poignant moment for a number of reasons: because Control Group, still in the search-and-negotiate stage of finding a new home and performance space, found the BINDERY as a safe haven for its spring performance; and because this marks the last hurrah for the BINDERY itself, which is being vacated by the LIDA Project for a new space of its own. Confusing? Not so much: Like any small company on the avant-garde edge, both Control Group and LIDA live daily with a constant lack of funding or even just a safe place to work.
At any rate, the fragility of all things should float in the back of your mind while viewing When We Were Beautiful & All That Came After, a site-specific dance-theater work on the ephemeral nature of the end-of-life experience, whether it be that of an indie theater or a grandmother, which is what Mueller says inspired the work. See When We Were Beautiful beginning at 8 p.m. tonight and continuing through Saturday at the same time at the BINDERY, 770 22nd Street.
