If you’re a fool for musicals, especially ones about Colorado mythology, this is your lucky April Fools Day. Fresh City Life’s series Sing Out, Sister: Broadway Musicals Through a Hollywood Lens features a screening of The Unsinkable Molly Brown, which tells the tale of the Molly Brown House matron, Margaret “Molly” Brown, a Leadville girl by way of Hannibal, Missouri, who became a Denver socialite and famously — and bravely — survived the sinking of the Titanic in 1912.
Starring a radiant Debbie Reynolds as Molly and Harve Presnell as her husband, Johnny, the 1964 song-and-dance Unsinkable is relentlessly brassy and not particularly true in its history-telling, yet it’s also a barrel of toe-tappin’ fun and produced such inspirational ditties as “I Ain’t Down Yet.”
The free screening begins at 6:30 p.m. in the downstairs B2 Conference Room at the Denver Central Library, 10 West 14th Avenue Parkway; other films in the series, ongoing on consecutive Tuesdays, include Sweet Charity, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers and Oklahoma!.
