As Summer Jackson, organizer of the third annual March of the Zombies Fashion Show, observes, there’s a certain logic to zombie fashion: “You’re sort of frozen in time when the zombie attacks happen” — in effect, a stylish person makes a stylish zombie. And since both fashion and zombie attacks involve always being prepared, it follows that dressing for the contingency that you could become a zombie at any given moment is probably a good idea. With that in mind, here’s a few looks to consider.
Zombie Boy There is probably nobody in the world more prepared to look like a zombie than Rick “Zombie Boy” Genest, given that he already looks like a zombie — something that has not escaped the notice of the fashion establishment. He made his runway debut in Paris earlier this month at the Thierry Mungler Fashion Show, and not long before that, Lady Gaga tapped him to appear in the video for “Born This Way,” even though he was not actually, you know, born this way.
The Aquabats: “Fashion Zombies!” On the other hand, according to nerd-punk band The Aquabats’ minor 2005 hit “Fashion Zombies!” they must have been born this way. Whatever the case, the key, according to the band, is to dress in expensive fashions to look like you crawled out of a coffin. To accomplish that, the band further stipulates, you should crawl to the mall to shop for tight black jeans, spiky belts and scissors for the Zelda cut. Because what kind of zombie doesn’t have a Zelda cut?
Will you step up to support Westword this year?
At Westword, we’re small and scrappy — and we make the most of every dollar from our supporters. Right now, we’re $23,250 away from reaching our December 31 goal of $50,000. If you’ve ever learned something new, stayed informed, or felt more connected because of Westword, now’s the time to give back.
Michael Jackson: “Thriller” The video for Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” is of course not explicitly about fashion — we’re pretty sure it’s about Michael Jackson trolling his date — but if you can think of anything more stylish for either the living or the undead than that red leather suit, we’d really like to know what it is.
