In 2009, Dr. George Tiller, one of only a handful of doctors in the country who performed late-term abortions, was fatally shot while at-tending church services in his home town of Wichita, Kansas. Tonight, Physicians for Human Rights Colorado is partnering with the Sie FilmCenter to present After Tiller, a 2013 documentary that explores the dangerous existence led by Tiller and doctors like him, as well as the complex situations and ethical struggles of the patients who receive the third-trimester procedure.
“Whether you’re pro-choice or pro-life, the film takes a look at this as more than just a political issue,” explains Ernie Quiroz, programming director for the Sie. “It’s about how these doctors interact with their patients and how these women are in a position of making a very hard decision.” Featured at Sundance in 2013 — and a 2014 nominee for the Independent Spirit Awards — After Tiller has been championed as a film that, rather than taking sides, offers an empathetic perspective on all parties involved.
