The first time I saw an Eames lounge chair in person, I sort of lost my breath. It was the first time I ever really felt speechless. I had seen so many of the iconic molded-plywood-and-leather lounge chairs in design and architecture magazines, but to come into physical contact with a chair of such cultural importance was like running into a celebrity. I almost took a picture of it.
Tonight I can recreate the first time at the opening reception of the Eames exhibit, Eames 100: This is the Trick, at the Emmanuel Gallery on the Auraria Campus. The show features pieces of furniture, toys, drawings and other design ephemera from the collection of the Eames’ own granddaughter, Carla Hartman. The party starts at 4 and runs until 7 p.m.; the exhibit is up through September 6, and Hartman will give an informal lecture on August 24. For more information, visit www.emmanuelgallery.org.
