It’s the nature of aerial dance to be different in the first place, but Nancy Smith of Boulder’s Frequent Flyers Productions has never had a problem letting her freak flag fly — through the air, literally — during her twenty years of off-the-floor choreographing. So her latest flight of fancy, The New Comic Book Heroes, a seventy-minute aerial takeoff on the whole superhero thing (which features a host of characters dancing against projections of images by local comic artist Scorpio Steele, with interspersed text by poet Jack Collum) shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone familiar with her typical work.
“I got the idea of creating a piece where aerial dance interacts with visual art in a way that it actually completes the picture,” says Smith, who portrays Our Lady of Perpetual Help (aka the Dashboard Nun) in the piece. She’ll be joined on stage by super-powered drum majorette Whirly Woman, the stilt-walking Alexis Scissor Legs and a host of others. The collaborative multimedia program opens tonight at 8 p.m. and continues on weekends through April 20 at the Dairy Center for the Arts, 2590 Walnut Street in Boulder.
