During “A Vivid View” — the 22nd annual Black Arts Festival, which starts today and runs through Sunday in City Park — visitors will lose themselves in a smorgasbord of pan-African creativity: song, dance, visual arts, crafts, pageantry, spoken word and soulful cuisine.
Today, the Community Mural Project will complete a panel reflecting the festival theme, while the Community Arts Project’s Sculpture Garden provides an interactive, hands-on experience assembling objects found throughout the city into a work of art. Elsewhere, the Health and Help Pavilion will provide information on contemporary health issues, and local hip-hop organizations will be on hand to help celebrate Youth Day.
Saturday opens with the Boogaloo Parade, featuring themed floats and costumes, marching bands and drum and drill teams. Later, adults and children alike can visit “Storyville,” where local bards will showcase African and African-American oral traditions.
Throughout the weekend, the festival will offer jazz, blues, soul and gospel performances as well as exhibitors galore. It all takes place around the lake and bandshell in the park, East 17th Avenue and Colorado Boulevard. Visit www.denbaf.org or call 303-298-1027.
