Obituaries are the final stories of our lives. And while they vary in length and detail, even the most cut-and-dried provoke questions about their subject. Poet Hilary DePolo based a series of 32 poems on obituaries she researched, then turned them over to artists who created pieces for Character Sketches, now hanging in the Loveland Museum/Gallery (503 North Lincoln Avenue in Loveland).
While usually resistant to this kind of project, painter Peter Illig admits, “I was knocked out by her work, and so I agreed.” Artist Vincent Comparetto concurs: “The idea of pairing a bunch of artists with a poet can be a disaster, but in the case of Hilary, you can tell by the way she writes that she, too, is a visual artist. Her prose elicits imagery.”
