One fine evening, as my family drove through downtown Denver, we spotted an unusual sight: a tipsy gaggle of bicyclists coming down the street that made me smile and wave. These bikers wore no sleek paraphernalia made of super-wicking mystery fabrics, nor were they mohawked, pierced, lean and mean. They were regular folks like you and me, out for a leisurely evening ride, except for one thing: Their hair stuck out all over, pink and sequined and silly. Oh yes, I thought, of course. It was the Wednesday-night Denver Cruisers ride, I remembered, and the theme that week was Wigs and Bad Hair.
We’ve blabbed about the Cruisers more than once, particularly when founder Brad Evans and his paramour-on-wheels, Erin Siegel, got hitched a few years ago during the last ride of the season. This is street theater made in heaven, the stuff we live for, typing away at our keyboards day in and day out.
So, golly, it’s a beautiful day, and this week’s theme is an Oktoberfest-friendly Lederhosen & Bierleichen, which fills my brain with a whole lot of interesting imagery. And I’m mentioning: Tonight’s ride starts at 6:30 p.m. with meetups at the Skylark, Brooklyn’s or Jake’s, and then it’s off and away, into the night. Good-behavior rules apply, so cruise on over to www.denvercruisers.com for a newbie primer, and figure out how you’re going to look when you get there. Cruise on.
Wednesdays, 7 p.m. Starts: May 18. Continues through Sept. 28, 2011
