The former local theater group Next Stage Denver was the first to host MisCast as a fundraiser in Denver, but after that troupe dissolved last summer, Paragon Theatre stepped in and asked for permission to pick up the ball and keep running with it. And it’s not hard to see why: The idea, to gather an all-star cast of local performers who each get a chance to perform a number or scene from a show they would never do in real life, is a hoot. The result includes a good deal of gender bending: Paragon’s Michael Stricker reads from The Vagina Monologues; Tracy Shaffer Witherspoon of the Denver Center Theatre Company joins Jim Hunt for a medley of duets from favorite musicals — with the roles reversed; Emily Paton Davies and Tom Borillo do the same with a scene from Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. In other words, it’s an evening of camp, piled high atop more camp: 99 percent hilarious and the rest wishful thinking on the part of the performers.
