The first thing audiences are likely to notice about on-the-rise standup comic Carly Aquilino is her bright-red hair, which is dyed a shade that does not exist in the natural world. Fortunately, Aquilino transcends her stage hair with witty and relatable material that delves into the muck of personal relationships and champions self-actualization.

After making a big splash on the New York standup scene, where she’s a regular at the Gotham Comedy Club, the quick-witted and telegenic Aquilino soon found a home on television. She’s the breakout star of MTV’s Girl Code; her facility with jokes and insight into relationships liven up that show’s format. She’s parlayed her success into additional television appearances, on shows like Guy Court and Ain’t That America. This year, she’ll be joining the illustrious company of Carson Daly by hosting the New Year’s Eve festivities on MTV.

Aquilino will begin a four-night Denver gig tonight at 8 p.m. at the downtown Comedy Works, 1226 15th Street in Larimer Square. Tomorrow night’s show will be the only eighteen-and-up program of the run (though prudish audiences should be advised that Aquilino works pretty blue); the remainder of the shows, which run through Saturday, are for 21-and-older crowds. Tickets are $20 to $26; visit comedyworks.com or call 303-595-3637 for information.
