While Veronica Reeves recognizes that there's a place for calculated, meticulously planned art, that place isn't NEXT Gallery. Not right now. Reeves has organized an entire show, Mindpool 2012, dedicated to creative work that comes from intuition and chance, and celebrating risk over regulation. "At first I was a little worried that all I would get would be a huge batch of abstract-expressionist work," says Reeves. "But I was really pleased, because we got a huge variety of all kinds of different work."

From photography to installation to sculpture, this juried show features recent work in diverse mediums from more than thirty artists with different levels of experience. What ties them all together is the way they relinquish control over the outcome of their work and leave elements open to chance and inspiration. One of Reeves's favorite pieces is Kendall Thompson's "Blink," which captures the unexpected moment of a woman blinking. "I think it requires fearlessness and bravery," she explains. "When it's successful, I think it's because of it being created in a sincere way, where the artist is almost confronted with a problem and then they have to work to figure out that puzzle and their piece."

Mindpool 2012 opens tonight with a reception at NEXT Gallery, 3659 Navajo Street, from 6 to 10 p.m.; sound artist Synthia Payne will provide the musical entertainment. The show runs through June 3; for more information, call 303-433-4933 or visit http://nextartgallerydenver.com.
Fridays-Sundays. Starts: May 18. Continues through June 3, 2012
