"One of the things I love about working with artists who use repurposed materials is that not only are they expressing themselves aesthetically, they are also saying, look, I'm trying to take something that would otherwise be thrown into the landfill and turn it into something people want to put on their walls," says Mary Allman-Koernig, public art Coordinator for The City of Aurora.
After putting out a call for artists for the project, Allman-Koernig was surprised to be contacted by Lily Erb, a sculptor and printmaker based in Virginia. Even though this is a one-day only event, she says Erb was still interested in participating, as it gave her a great reason to travel west and connect with a new audience.
Erb as well as two Colorado artists -- Brenda Stumpf and Janice McDonald -- will be demonstrating how they apply found objects and reclaimed materials to the work they do. And then you'll get to make your own piece of art from recycled wood and plastic materials to take home.
The artists will also bring finished pieces available for sale.
Recycling Reversal: The Art of Rubbish runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, September 21 in the Community Room of the Aurora Public Library. The event is free and open to all ages; for more information, visit the City of Aurora's website.Follow @WestwordCulture
